Where to learn typing
Where to learn typing
To know where to learn typing, not so long ago, there wasn't much of a problem. The answer was simple: the neighborhood academy, the one run by that elderly lady that you went to when the school year ended, before going to camp.
Times change and now most of the best methods to learn typing are online.
Why learn typing
The main reason is time optimization. It is a skill that we should all learn, regardless of our profession. Learning it once is enough. Just like riding a bicycle.
The speed acquired is another aspect, but continuing with the bicycle analogy, we may be more or less trained and we will have different skills. That is, we will write faster or slower with more or less accuracy, but the acquired typing technique will endure.
How to learn typing
To learn typing you have to follow a methodology. Every teacher has their own book, and this methodology will change mainly based on the texts used to teach it in one way or another.
Although there may be substantial differences, broadly speaking you start by learning a home row position, from which we will always start. After that initial position, we will learn the upper and lower keys depending on the order established for learning.
After consolidating the learned keys, you move on to the speed phase, in which the main objective is to acquire speed and accuracy, that is, to type fast and without mistakes.
That is, of course, without looking at the keyboard.
How to place your fingers on the keyboard to type faster
To know how to place your fingers on the keyboard, we will have to look at our keyboard at the F and J keys. If we run our fingers over these keys, we can notice that they have small ridges. The ridges on the F and J keys serve as a guide. We will always place our index fingers on them, the left on the F key and the right on the J key. Once we automate this, we can always place our hands in the home row position without looking at the keyboard.
In turn, the rest of the fingers should be placed on the corresponding keys.
Left hand:
- Pinky – A
- Ring – S
- Middle – D
- Index – F
- Thumb – Space
Right hand:
- Pinky – Ñ
- Ring – L
- Middle – K
- Index – J
- Thumb – Space
We leave you a video here so you can see how to place your fingers:
The use of the thumb can be indifferent, but we recommend that the thumb used to press the Space key is the one of the opposite hand to the last key pressed.
Typing for children
The best time to learn, for almost any skill, is when we are children. We are, as they commonly say, a sponge. Our recommendation from Kluppy is that as soon as students have developed sufficient motor skills, they start to learn typing at school.
Typing helps a lot to improve fine motor skills, so in addition to learning a very useful skill for the future, the student will be improving other aspects.

How to improve typing
