5 benefits of learning touch typing

Discover what learning touch typing can do for you

When our clients ask us what the benefits of knowing touch typing are, our first answer is usually the most obvious and clear one: it optimizes your time. But we know that is not the only benefit of learning touch typing. That is why we are going to look at the main benefits of learning touch typing:

Optimize your time

We directly link knowing touch typing with typing on the keyboard quickly and fluidly. Without it taking too much effort to write a text of a few lines. This is undoubtedly the main benefit of learning touch typing.

Look at your interlocutor

If you are facing the public, sometimes you may have to write certain texts while interacting with your interlocutor. It can be a polite gesture to be able to talk to a client while taking down their details or writing a note for them, just as you would if you were writing by hand.

Improve your motor skills

Touch typing is an excellent exercise for the fine motor skills of your fingers. During growth periods, for the youngest members of the household, it helps them gain dexterity and strength in their fingers, thereby improving hand motor skills. Ultimately, it is a matter of muscle memory, and the brain reacts in a way that ends up positioning the fingers more intuitively.

Write longer texts

When someone wants to run a marathon, the first day they start training to run, they are not able to cover the distance of 42km. We will probably run 5km and our effort will seem superhuman.

The same thing happens with touch typing. When we struggle to use the keyboard fluidly, our mind will choose to "optimize" the texts we are going to write, with the aim of making them more suited to our writing level. This fact will make the texts we write, involuntarily, shorter, and we will leave part of the message behind along the way.

Improve linear reading

We are currently in a world where vertical reading is the order of the day. In addition to this, we are probably greatly increasing the use of techniques such as skimming (identifying concepts and ideas) or scanning (reading and exploring what we need). New technologies lead us to this, making us pay attention to many stimuli while we want to read a text.

But this is causing us to lose ability in linear reading, that is, reading a text from beginning to end. Doing touch typing exercises will force us to do a linear reading, since to pass the exercises during learning, we will not be able to skip a single comma.

In summary, the five benefits of knowing touch typing are:

  1. You optimize the time spent in front of the computer
  2. You can look at your interlocutor while typing
  3. You improve fine motor skills
  4. You write longer texts with less effort
  5. Improvement in linear reading
