What Are WPM and CPM: Typing Speed Explained
When measuring typing speed, two main metrics are used: WPM (Words Per Minute) and CPM (Characters Per Minute). While they measure the same skill, they do so differently.
WPM: Words Per Minute
WPM divides the total characters typed by 5 (the average word length). It is the international standard. A good typist averages 40-60 WPM, while professionals often exceed 70 WPM.
CPM: Characters Per Minute
CPM counts every individual keystroke. It is commonly used in Spanish-speaking countries for civil service exams. The approximate conversion is: WPM = CPM / 5.
